Bill -
I did a 'quick-scan' of all three of your emails. There are a lot
of questions/sub-questions in there, so I'll just stay up at
the 10000-foot level and start with a few 'overview' answers.
The LATEST wlan-ng driver is 'pre26'. If you have a kernel newer
than 2.6.7, then you must use the latest. ('pre23' works on 2.6.7
and earlier kernels.)
It can be non-trivial to build wlan-ng from sources and re-configure
a wireless-card using 'wlan-ng' driver and tools...there is typically
a 2 or 3 day elapsed time 'learning curve'. This is, of course, very
dependent on your familiarity with Linux and 'source-code-level'
installations
(as compared with installing a binary application kit) and depends
on your experience with networking in general and
with wireless networking in particular.
Since you ALSO are asking questions like '...or should I consider a 'g'
card rather than an older '802.11b' card', you should probably
grapple with THAT question first. (That said, you can also learn a lot
about Linux and wireless-networking by taking the time to play with
the slower 'b' cards, even if you do eventually decide to go with a newer
'g' card.)
This group's wlan-ng website contains the hardware-list of supported (and
unsupported) cards, so it is crucial that you FIRST consult that list
carefully for each card, to understand whether the 'wlan-ng' (aka prism2)
driver will work. The 'wlan-ng' driver supports ONLY 'b' cards.
Here's the list:
http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters.html.gz
Make SURE that you look at the two colums 'Linux-support' and if the
phrase 'Linux-wlan-ng' is NOT in one of those two columns, then
the driver will NOT work. (The list tries to give hints as to which Linux
driver MIGHT work for that model/chip in those cases.)
Hope this helps for starters...
Dave

To further thicken the plot, I was unable to iwconfig several items to the
interface, like the channel, access-point etc.
I am completely confused. If there is another card I should just go and buy
I am open to that suggestion. I need it to run kismet, and run nicely on
linux. If there is an a/b/g card that would be nice.
Unfortunately this is a notebook, so there is not much stopping me from
throwing the damn thing out the window :|
Thanks for any advice!

After many trials and tribulations I now have two new cards here, neither of
which I can get to work:

who have, but nothing I have tried has helped. If anyone can tell me what I
am doing wrong, I'd appreciate it. At this point things are scattered but
