I will do this test later (I am not presently at the location where the
troublesome machine is located). Having said that, I must admit that I
don't think that such a test performed on my box, will yield the same
results.

I have on numerous occasions downloaded large files without any
problems, using ftp, ncftp, wget or a webbrowser. The problem seems to
reside in when the link is inactive; I have seen it go down almost
immediatly after a large download has fininished.
