Guess it's a kernel version problem, from the README:

This version of the driver was tested using the following software:
   - Linux kernel version 2.2.9 & 2.2.12
   - pcmcia-cs version 3.0.9 & 3.0.14
...

go back to kernel 2.2.x or port / find someone to port it to 2.4.x
There is a paper about porting drivers 2.2.x -> 2.4.x kernel somewhere in
the web.
The driver at http://mc2drv.berlios.de for the ELSA MC2 (which has the
same hardware inside) will probably fail, because AFAIK Z-COM wrote a
firmware rather different to the original AMD one for those ones.
