Dear Readers
I am new to this mailing list and relatively new to Linux.
With tips, hints, ideas and discussions from the web and this mailing list, my Speedstream
1022 is FINALLY hooking up to my wireless network. However, the USB WLAN adapter is far
from working properly and still not giving a browsing experience.
System configuration: redhat-release 9-3, kernel 2.4.20-8/ i686. router: SMC 7004AWBR, no
WEP, no MAC access control
Initially had:
1. Installed Tim Miller's RH 9/ USB/ i686/ kernel 2.4.20-8 RPMS.
2. edited /etc/wlan/wlan.conf and /etc/wlan/wlancfg-"whateveryourssid"
3. checked /etc/modules.conf for alias entries -> OK
4. modprobe prism2_usb prism2_doreset=1
5. ran both wlanctl-ng cmd lines as per instructions
6. USB WLAN adapter would not work.... :-(
Changes made:
1.&2. see 1.&2. above
3. changed /etc/modules.conf prism2 alias line from doreset=1 to doreset=0
4. UNPLUGGED USB WLAN adapter (when I leave the adapter plugged in during boot up the
kernel does not like it)
5. reboot system
6. lsmod: usb modules, p80211 and prism2 modules are loaded
7. plugged in USB WLAN adapter, responds with "ip_tables ...."
8. run 1. wlanctl-ng cmd line (as per instruction) - green Link led is blinking
9. run 2. wlanctl-ng cmd line (as per instruction) - green Link led is on
10. ifconfig wlan0 <myIPaddress>
11. iwconfig, returns details of USB WLAN adapter, on dev wlan0
12. ping other machines on network -> they respond, how exciting!
>From here down hill again:
1. startx (would like to browse Internet)
2. run Mozilla, does not connect to Internet
3. wlan0 does not show up in network config applet
4. ctrl-alt-backspace, try to ping again NO response....
Next step:
Install USB hub to work around "hotplunging" at boot up
My question:
Why does RH9 not list device wlan0? Why can I not access Internet with Mozilla?
With kind regards
Beat Naef
